October 16, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Regina Pats News Release
Regina, Sask. - TheÃÂ Regina Pats displayed another strong effort on Friday night, but won't have any points to show for it, as theyÃÂ were defeated 4-2 by the Winnipeg Ice. The Pats are now 2-4-0ÃÂ on the season, while the ICEÃÂ improve toÃÂ 5-0-0.
TheÃÂ Regiment got tallies from Borya Valis - his first in the WHL - and Cole Carrier, but it wasn't enough, as the Pats hit multiple posts in the third period while looking for the equalizer. Skyler Bruce'sÃÂ third period power play goal held up as the game-winner for Winnipeg, while they also added an empty-net goal.
Gage Alexander stopped 26 of 28 shots for the ICE and was named the game's first star, while Matthew Kieper was solid again in his sixth consecutive start, and made waves with an unbelievable glove save in the first period.
GAME SUMMARY
The ICE made good on their early opportunities, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first seven minutes thanks to goals from Chase Bertholet and Mikey Milne.
After some 4-on-4 actionÃÂ and a Pats power playÃÂ that yielded no results, Regina would find the equalizer at 5-on-5, after rookie Borya Valis hopped on a loose puck and ripped a wrist shot past the blocker side of Gage Alexander for his first career WHL goal.
Just moments after making it a 2-1, Pats goalkeeper Matthew Kieper made an incredible glove save, the early favourite forÃÂ WHL Save of the Year.
The Pats kept their strong play going after the stop, but the score remained 2-1 for the visitors after the first period, with Regina leading in shots on goal 9-7.
In the second period, the game remained tight and it took nearly the whole period until the game's next goal, with Pats veteran Cole Carrier tapping the puck into a yawning cage with 2:05 to go to tie things up 2-2.
After 40 minutes of play, the game was all square, with the Pats leading the shots on goal counter 21-15.
Early in the third period, the Pats were whistled for too many men on the ice and Winnipeg capitalized, with Skyler Bruce one-timing it past Kieper off a good feed from Owen Pederson down low.
After that, time seemed to fly by, and the score remained the same late in the third, when Regina pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker.
With Kieper on the bench, the Pats hit back-to-back posts, first Evans, then Bateman, and that was as close as they'd come, with the ICE adding an empty-net goal to make it 4-2.
The Pats went 0-for-3 on the power play, while the ICE went 1-for-2.
THEY SAID IT
"Honestly I thought we played really well. We're really proud of our guys. We worked hard all week on a system that we thought we could compete with Winnipeg tonight. ÃÂ It was a much different game than the game we played a couple weeks back in Winnipeg. Our guys played the kind of game weÃÂ need to play against a really good hockey team...We produced lots of good scoring chances and that's probably what has held us back the last two, three games: is just not managing to score on those opportunities. We just need to stick to that same game. We've played tight, close checking games and when we get opportunities, we need to score. Our fate will change as long as our guys continue to believe in ourÃÂ system and ourÃÂ process, and the puck will start going in. That's typically what happens. If you're not getting chances, I think you need to be concerned, but if you're getting scoring chances, sooner or later the puck is going to start going in for you." - Asst. coach Ken Schneider
