ALMOST HAD IT: A two-goal lead was spoiled Saturday night as Team USA U18 rattled off four unanswered goals in the second half of the contest to secure a 4-2 win from the Ann Arbor Ice Cube in the 2013-14 season opener. Aidan Muir debuted with his first multiple-point effort (G, A) while Mitch Hults also added a tally in net. Samu Perhonen recorded 22 saves on 26 shots on net.
HOMETOWN DEBUT: Aidan Muir made quite the USHL debut as the Edmonton Oilers draft pick recorded two points (G, A) in his hometown of Ann Arbor, MI on Saturday. He scored the first goal of the season for the Ice as well as recording an assist on Mitch Hults' goal later in the second period. Muir joined the Indy roster this season after being selected first overall in the USHL Entry draft this spring and is committed to playing college hockey at Western Michigan University.
OUR BARN: The Ice return to the familiar confines of Pan Am Pavilion this weekend, looking to build on a 7-2-0 home opening record since joining the USHL in 2004. Indy has won their last four home openers, recording shutouts in two of the past three contests. Casey DeSmith (UNH-HE) blanked the Sioux Falls Stampede 5-0 in the 2010-11 home opener, stopping all 33 shots while Peter Schneider (Notre Dame-HE) and Jarrod Rabey (St. Cloud-NCHC) both recorded a pair of goals. Dalton Izyk (Robert Morris-AH) bested all 18 of the Omaha Lancers' shots during the 2012-13 home opener as Brian Morgan (Maine-HE) and Austin Ortega (UNO-NCHC) provided the scoring touch in the 2-0 victory.
OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN: Three-year veteran Tyler Pham is donning some extra real estate on his jersey as the Fort Collins, Colorado native was named the team captain for the 2013-14 tenth anniversary season. Pham has played in over 100 games with Indy since joining the squad in the 2011-12 season.
EYES ON YOU: Defenseman Josh Jacobs, forward Jacob Pritchard and goaltender Jason Pawloski were all listed on the NHL Central Scouting's annual "Ones to Watch" list for the 2014 NHL Draft in June at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA. The annual list is a preliminary ranking system for NHL scouts, naming top draft prospects in North America and across the globe.
PLAYER CONTENT: Mitch Hults recorded four shots and a power play goal in Saturday's contest at Team USA...Michael Preston leads the team with seven penalty minutes...Joshua Jacobs leads all team defensemen with three shots on net.
TEAM BEATS: Indy's road power play conversion (25.0%) is fourth in the league...The Ice are tied for the lead in penalty minutes (19)...Both Sioux Falls and Muskegon are coming off opening weekend victories.
