ICE Get 3-1 Win over Rockets to Make It 8-In-A-Row at Home
December 12, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Winnipeg Ice News Release
The Kelowna Rockets were in town tonight to face an ICE team that has won its past 7 home games at the ICE Cave in Wayne Fleming Arena. Both teams were missing some of their star players as Nolan Foote (KEL) and Peyton Krebs (WPG) are both at Team Canada's World Junior Camp. ICE forwards Michal Teply (CZE) and Nino Kinder (GER) are both at their respective country's camps as well.
It was a scoreless first period, with shots being even at 6. The ICE went 0/3 on the power-play in the first frame, as the Rockets went 0/1. After trading power play opportunities in the second, Connor McClennon scored at 17:16 of the second to give the ICE the lead heading into the second intermission. Brad Ginnell drew the assist on McClennon's 11th of the season.
McClennon would record his second goal of the night 4 minutes into the third period as he doubled the ICE's lead. The ICE would score 5 minutes later to take a 3-0 lead with Jakin Smallwood getting the goal for the ICE. The Rockets would ruin Hughes' shutout in the third after a strange bounce led to Jake Lee putting the puck into a wide open net. Kelowna outshot the ICE 33-27 but were unable to get any more chances to tie the game up.
This win is the ICE's 8th home win in a row, as they head to Saskatchewan to take on Prince Albert and Regina, but will be back home against Brandon on December 17th.
