March 25, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
Some of the Ice Flyers may have been losing their hair on St. Baldrick's Night but they had no intention of losing anything else. The Mississippi RiverKings may have scored first but the Ice Flyers would mount a comeback for the second night in a row to secure the 3-1 win.
The first period was a scoreless affair but there were two bouts 6 minutes apart. Ryan Hohl would get into his 3rd fight in 24 hours when he and Mississippi's Gabriel Boutin-Gagnon dropped the gloves just 2:09 into the game. At the 8:09 mark, Kevin Brojek took on the RiverKings' Justin MacDonald.
Mississippi scored first when Deven Stillar put the puck behind Jesse Kallechy to give the RiverKings the lead 3:58 into the second. Roughly ten minutes later Matt Robertson sped towards Mississippi's Scott Darling and fired a wrister glove side. Tyler Soehner and Ryan Hohl would get the assists.
The teams would go over 20 minutes of game time tied at 1 before Andrew Harrison would go in on the forecheck and get the puck back from the RiverKings and put in the work needed and kept poking at the puck before it finally went in the net on the unassisted effort. With 2:53 remaining in the game Ryan Corry would tip in a Chris Wilson shot on the power play to give the Ice Flyers they 2-1 lead. The secondary assist on the power play goal went to Steve Bergin.
Jesse Kallechy stopped 19 of the 20 shots the RiverKings threw his way. Matt Robertson was named the 3rd star and Andrew Harrison was the number 1 star. The man who stole the show was Mississippi's Scott Darling who was named the 2nd star of the night for stopping 50 of the Ice Flyers 53 shots.
The Ice Flyers will return to the Hangar for playoff action next Friday when they host the Mississippi Surge in the first round of the SPHL President's Cup playoffs.
