RiverHawks Close Regular Season with a Loss

March 25, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release

The Augusta RiverHawks closed out their regular season play with a 4-1 loss at the hands of the Columbus Cottonmouths Saturday night at the Columbus Civic Center. The loss makes it just the second time this season the RiverHawks have lost two games in a row, as the RiverHawks fell to the Knoxville Ice Bears Friday night in their first game since clinching the regular season championship.

For the second night in a row the SPHL's best power play came up empty, as the RiverHawks were denied on six chances with the man advantage. Once again they ran into a very hot goaltender, as Ian Vigier made 35 saves to pick up his league-leading 21st win of the season.

The Snakes got off to the early-game lead with a pair of goals in the first period coming off the sticks of Orrin Hergott and Mitch Wall. The lead was extended to three goals early in the second period, as Levi Lind scored just 52 seconds into the second frame.

It appeared that the quick Cottonmouths goal woke the RiverHawks up as they quickly replied fewer than two minutes later. Defenseman Ed Snetsinger scored with assists being awarded to Tyler Howe and Jim Gehring. However, the RiverHawks were unable to build any momentum in the rest of the period, and they skated into the dressing room still down two goals after 40 minutes of play.

The RiverHawks were handed an opportunity to narrow the gap with a power play just five minutes into the third frame. Instead of narrowing the gap it widened, as David Cianfrini scored an unassisted short-handed goal just 30 seconds later, closing the door on any RiverHawks comeback.

In spite of the two losses to finish the campaign, the RiverHawks have enjoyed a stellar regular season putting up a record of 36-13-7, and winning the William B. Coffey Trophy as regular season champions. The Cottonmouths finished in second place with a record of 33-16-5.

The RiverHawks open the playoffs on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Wednesday, March 28th as they play the Huntsville Havoc in Game One of the SPHL Quarter-Finals. The puck drops at 7:35pm .Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office. Additional information on the Team, tickets, and schedule are available on the RiverHawks' home on the web, www.augustariverhawks.com or by calling 706-993-2645.
