Ice Flyers Raise Banner, Defeat Columbus 6-2

PENSACOLA, Fla. - T he Pensacola Ice Flyers defeated the Columbus Cottonmouths 6-2 in front of 4,428 fans on Championship Celebration Night. The win was powered by Mitchell Good's goal and four assists in front 4,428 fans on Championship Celebration Night.

The Ice Flyers fell behind early as a frantic play broke out in front of the Pensacola crease and Columbus' Matt Gingera was there to bang in a rebound. Gingera's goal came just 1:30 into the first period. Columbus took a 2-0 lead just 11 into a power play as Tom Maldonado scored as Mitchell Good was in the box. The Ice Flyers got on the board when defenseman Drew Baker fired the puck home on a power play to cut the Snakes lead down to 2-1. Mark Thorburn and Podge Turnbull assisted on the tally.

The Ice Flyers came out firing in the second period. Joe Caveney tied the game just 1:19 into the period. Mitchell Good and Paul Rodrigues picked up the assists on the goal. A short time later, Caveney struck again and again it was Good and Rodrigues on the assists as the Ice Flyers made it 3-2. Adam Pawlick pushed the lead to 4-2 with 11:55 remaining in the period. He got his stick on a pass from Good and redirected the puck past Columbus goalie Jesse Chenard's right leg. Donnie Harris had the other assist on Pawlick's goal. The action wasn't quite done as Joe Bueltel dropped the mitts with Columbus' Kevin Kessler and got the better of Kessler.

Kessler picked up an extra penalty for roughing and with the Ice Flyers still on a power play to start the third period, defenseman Shaun Arvai netted his first goal of the season just 22 seconds into the third period. Caveney and Good assisted on Arvai's goal. The Ice Flyers went up 6-2 when Good put the puck behind Chenard. Caveney picked up the lone assist on the goal. On the ensuing faceoff, Bueltel got into his second fight of the night, this time with the Cottonmouths' Will Aide.

For their efforts, Mitchell Good, Joe Caveney, and Paul Rodrigues were named the first, second, and third stars of the game respectively.

The Ice Flyers travel to Biloxi, Mississippi tomorrow to take on the Mississippi Surge tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Central at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
