Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- The Mississippi RiverKings (14-7-2) cut their deficit to one late in the midway through the third period, but it was not enough as the Pensacola Ice Flyers (14-8-2) scored two unanswered goals late to take the 5-2 victory on Friday night.
Pensacola got on the board in the latter half of the first period on a five-on-three power play. With Charles Lachance and Matt Krahn assessed penalties for roughing and delay of game respectively, Adam Pawlick took a Brett Lutes pass and buried it past Krahn to give the visitors a 1-0 lead 13:36 into the action. The RiverKings answered back four minutes later when Matt Whitehead's shot beat Ross MacKinnon to send the teams to the locker room tied at one.
The Ice Flyers wasted little time regaining the lead in the second. Steve Whitely deflected a Shaun Arvai pass from the blueline past Krahn on the power play 2:07 into the middle frame to give Pensacola a 2-1 lead. Seven minutes later, Justin Alonzo took a pass from Josh Turnbull and beat the RiverKings' netminder to give Pensacola a 3-1 lead at the second intermission.
In the third, the RiverKings battled to within one. Matt Whitehead took a Matt Harrington pass and beat MacKinnon blocker side to cut the deficit to 3-2. But the Ice Flyers scored two unanswered goals late in the game from Ryan Salvis and Lutes to give Pensacola the 5-2 win.
Matt Krahn (7-2-2) took the loss after stopping 35 of 40 shots against. Ross MacKinnon (4-1-1) turned aside 22 of 24 shots in the win.
The RiverKings return to the ice tomorrow night in Louisiana against the IceGators. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. with all the action airing live on Sports 56 and 87.7FM. Be sure to catch all the action at Old Style BBQ, the Official Away Game Watch Party Headquarters of the Mississippi RiverKings.
