PENSACOLA, FL - The Pensacola Ice Flyers were determined to get two points against the Peoria Rivermen but left with one in their 4-3 overtime loss in front of the 5, 537 at the Pensacola Bay Center on Saturday night.
Pensacola opened the scoring with a goal contributed by their new addition, Nick Larson, from Nick Lazorko at the 16:04 mark of the first . However, it only took Peoria nine seconds to respond with a tying goal from Steve Morra to end the period 1-1.
Following the on-ice Mardi Gras parade, five and a half minutes into the second the Ice Flyers retook the lead with a goal by Brett Lutes with assists to Steve Bergin and Larson. And yet again the Rivermen tied up the game just over two minutes later with Alex Hudson's goal.
As the third period began, Pensacola's Brandon Blair found himself in the box for boarding at the 3:42 mark. Peoria managed to capitalize with two seconds left on the power play as Jason Cohen found the back of the net to give the Rivermen their first lead of the game making it 3-2.
Nerves started to build in the Bay Center as time wound down. With just 5:22 left in regulation, the Ice Flyers were back in the game as Nick McParland made it 3-3.
The game couldn't be settled in regulation, so began the five minute three-on-three overtime period. Back-and-forth action ensued and both Max Strang and Kyle Rank stood tall on both ends.
