Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
PENSACOLA, FL. (March 16, 2014) - The Pensacola Ice Flyers had one of the most historic nights on Saturday that the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) has ever seen. Their 2-1 victory clinched first place in the SPHL while extending their SPHL record of most consecutive games with at least a point to 20 games in front of 7,912 fans in attendance.
The Ice Flyers won the William B. Coffey Trophy for the regular season championship with the win over the Peoria Rivermen on Saturday. This is the first time in the team's five-year history they have accomplished this feat.
That same night, the Ice Flyers set the league record for total attendance in a single season with 114,537. That number was greatly boosted by the team's 5th Anniversary weekend, which saw crowds of 6,162 and a sellout of 8,046, and the final home weekend of the season, with crowds of 6,287 on Faith and Family Night and 7,912 on Fan Appreciation Night. The previous high was 109,615 set in 2006-07 by the Huntsville Havoc.
On Saturday, the Ice Flyers also set the SPHL single season record for the highest average attendance per game with an average of 4,090 through 28 games. The previous mark was 3,931 set during the 2007-08 season by the Fayetteville FireAntz. This also makes the Ice Flyers the first team in the SPHL's ten-year history to finish a regular season with an average of over 4,000 fans per game.
Pensacola will also finish the 2013-14 regular season with the highest attendance in the SPHL; another first for the Ice Flyers organization.
The Pensacola Ice Flyers have two remaining regular season games as they travel to take on the Bloomington Thunder on Friday, Mar. 21 and Saturday, Mar. 22 with a 7:05 p.m. CST puck drop both nights.
