Ice Flyers Bring in Defensemen Donnie Harris and Steve Whitely

PENSACOLA, Fla. (October 22, 2013) - The 2013 SPHL President's Cup Champion Pensacola Ice Flyers have re-signed defenseman Donnie Harris and signed defenseman Steve Whitely.

Harris is a 6' 3", 210 lbs. native of Fort Ashby, West Virginia and returns to Pensacola for his third season with the Ice Flyers. Last season, he appeared in 16 games and put up 2 assists, 10 penalty minutes, and a -9 rating. After the end of the NHL Lockout last season, he was called up to the ECHL's Evansville IceMen. Harris played in 34 games for the IceMen and had 5 points (2 goals, 3 assists), 14 penalty minutes, and a -11.

"Donnie is a great addition, and someone the fans are familiar with. He's got great size and skill and anytime you can have those two ingredients it's a step in the right direction," said Ice Flyers head coach Rod Aldoff.

Steve Whitely is a 6' 5", 220 lbs. rookie who hails from Petrolia, Ontario. He's spent the past five seasons playing for the Canadian Interuniversity Sport's (CIS) University of Waterloo Warriors. In 113 collegiate games, Whitely had 83 points (26 goals, 57 assists) and 181 penalty minutes. In 12 CIS playoff games, he had 4 assists and 16 penalty minutes.

Prior to his time at Waterloo, Whitely spent four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). In 238 OHL games, he had 37 points (4 goals, 33 assists), 354 penalty minutes, and a -15. In 35 career playoff games, Whitely had 6 assists, 33 penalty minutes, and a +7 rating.

Coach Aldoff had this to say about Whitely, "At 6'5, he is another defenseman with good size. He is coming off a good junior and college career and will add an all-around element to our already strong defense corps."
