Ice Flyers Advance to League Semi Finals
March 31, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
Once again Steve Christie was the key to the Ice Flyers' victory tonight as the Flyer downed the Mississippi Surge 2-0.
The first was full of rough play and a ton of hustle from the Ice Flyers. There were 14 penalties called in the first frame alone. Mississippi would get a shot in on Christie that would leave him writhing in pain on the ice for a few minutes resulting in a diving call for him.
Eight and half minutes into the second period Steve Bergin would put the Ice Flyers up 1-0 with a power play goal when Chris Wilson threw a pass from behind to goal line over the top of the crease and Bergin redirected it home. Andrew Harrison would push the lead to 2-0 when a pass, again from Wilson, found him and he put it home. The tough and gritty play would continue through the second as well.
The Ice Flyers had two missions in the third: kill the clock and keep the Surge from scoring. They masterfully completed both of them.
Pensacola would finish 1-for-4 on the power play and kill off all three of Mississippi's power plays. Steve Christie stopped all 28 shots the Surge put on net. Andrew Harrison was named the 3rd star, Steve Bergin the 2nd star, and Steve Christie's shutout earned him the 1st star.
The Ice Flyers now await the winner of game three between the Mississippi RiverKings and the Knoxville Ice Bears. That game will take place tomorrow in Knoxville at 5 PM Eastern Time.
