 Colorado Crush News Release
The Colorado Ice (3-2) got the revenge they wanted on the Omaha Beef (3-2), defeating them 39-32 in the second home game of their inaugural season Saturday night at the Budweiser Events Center. Colorado previously lost 31-20 to the Beef in Omaha on March 30.
The Ice are now 3-0 when they are the first team to score. Quarterback Ryan Clement led the team 33 yards down field in three plays that resulted in newly acquired wide receiver Ed Renteria's first receiving touchdown and put the Ice on top 7-0. Omaha missed a field goal attempt before Clement threw his first pick of the game. The subsequent play Beef quarterback James McNear threw a touchdown pass to Marques Johnson, but Ted Retzlaff missed the extra point.
The next possession for each team produced field goals, leaving Colorado 10-9. Omaha took the first lead on the next possession on a nine yard rush from Jamar Day to finish the quarter.
The Ice regained their lead when defensive back Travis Garcia returned an interception 44 yards for a touchdown. The Beef tied the score at 22 before halftime with another McNear-Johnson scoring pass.
Both teams missed field goals on the opening possessions of the second half, but Omaha hit one on the subsequent possession to take a 25-22 lead. Clement responded with a 30 yard scoring pass to Sean Ingram. R.J. Rollins returned Deric Yaussi's kickoff for a score that would be the Beef's final of the game.
Colorado's defense played a critical role in the team's win, particularly in the fourth quarter, holding the Beef to 0 points. The Ice have outscored their opponents 60-15 in the final quarter in the first five games this season, with RiverCity putting up the only points. Eugene Reed ran three yards for a score and Yaussi added one more field goal to secure the victory for the Ice.
Steve Frye led the defense with 5.5 total tackles, one TFL, two forced fumbles and two sacks. Travis Garcia had the only pick of the night, bringing his season total to four. He was credited with five pass breakups while teammate Corey Johnson had three. Clement finished the night 7-17-2 for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Reed ran for 55 yards and two scores, but added 72 yards on four kickoff returns. Renteria led the receiving unit with 56 yards and one touchdown while Ingram had 30 yards and the other receiving touchdown.
