Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
The Knoxville Ice Bears defeated the Mississippi Surge for the forth time this season in a shoot out tonight at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. The Surge, a new Southern Professional Hockey League expansion team, has never defeated the Knoxville Ice Bears.
Taylor Hustead scored his seventh goal of the season just five minutes into the first period with help from team captain Kevin Swider and defenseman Rich Zalewski, who played his second game of a three-game try-out. Nine penalties in the second period, including five Ice Bears penalties, created plenty of scoring opportunities. Knoxville's Swider had an even-strength goal at approximately seven minutes into the second period, as a crowd of 3,312 fans cheered. The Surge rallied back during a power play from a hooking call on Ice Bears' Chris Brannen.
Mississippi led the game 3-2 after two third period goals, one by Weidlich and the other by Richard. However, Ice Bears' rookie Randy Johnston tied the game and sent it into overtime. Forward Tim Vitek scored the winning shot as the fifth Ice Bears' shooter in the shoot out that followed.
The Knoxville Ice Bears will travel to Biloxi, Mississippi to play the Surge on New Year's Day.
