Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears took the ice in front of a sold out Civic Coliseum of 5,169 for the fourth consecutive meeting with the Peoria Rivermen. After three consecutive losses against Peoria, the Ice Bears logged an epic overtime win in the ninth round of the shootout. Knoxville captain, David Segal, notched the winning goal beating Peoria 2-1.

Segal and Peoria's Jarrett Rush started the game off in the penalty boxes, both received 10 minutes for inciting opponent. The Rivermen were first to light the scoreboard. Garrett Vermeersch buried a seeing eye puck past Ice Bear goaltender Bryan Hince at the 4:37 minute mark.

Peoria held off Knoxville through a power play, but at 10:15 John Higgins redirected the puck past Peoria's Eric Levine to tie the game at 1. Ben Power and Francis Drolet were assisted on the play.

The teams skated into the second period deadlocked at 1. Peoria received their first power play opportunity of the night when Corey Fulton was given 2 minutes for roughing. Then 30 seconds after the power play ended, Peoria skated another man advantage with Berkley Scott boxed for tripping. The Ice Bears erased both penalties.

The teams traded chances in the third. Segal and Levine were both called for roughing at 6:58 leaving the teams skating 4-on-4. Scott followed them to the box seconds later for tripping giving the Rivermen a 4-on-3 advantage. The Ice Bears killed the penalties, but were right back on the defense when Segal returned to the box. But the Rivermen couldn't push past the Ice Bears, ending regulation time tied at 1.

The game entered the 3-on-3, 5 minute SPHL overtime. Knoxville registered four shots on goal during overtime to Peoria's two. Neither of the teams were able to find the back of the net, and the game moved into the first Ice Bears shootout of the season. The shootout went for nine rounds until Segal shot past Levine to secure the win, 2-1.

The Ice Bears are back on home ice Thursday, February 6 to face off with the Fayetteville FireAntz. Fans should come out to celebrate all things Adam Sandler! It will also be another $1,000 Thursday. Plan ahead to attend the fan favorite Wiener Dog Race on Saturday, Feb. 8.
