Louisiana IceGators News Release

Lafayette, La.--Super Sunday turned into a disappointment for the Louisiana IceGators.

Kyle Kurdoch scored on a breakaway at the 3:37 mark of the final frame to give the Mississippi Surge a 2-1 victory over the IceGators. Jeff Martens assisted on the play.

The IceGators lack of scoring wasn't a lack of trying. Louisiana outshot the Surge 31-19, including 24-12 in the second period.

The IceGators and the Surge face each other twice again this week--once on Friday and once on Saturday. The IceGators have another game prior to those contests. They will travel down Interstate 10 to play the Pensacola IceFlyers Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.

"The effort was there, but we lost focus on a few plays, and it cost us," said IceGators head coach Kevin Kaminski. "We got pucks to the net, but we didn't do a good job of getting traffic in front. Other than that Grant goal, we didn't have much traffic.

"We weren't as crisp as we had been in the last few games."

Louisiana took a 1-0 lead early in the second period on a Jeff Grant goal. Grant deflected a Shawn McNeil shot past Surge goalie Mathieu Dugas at the 1:42 mark of the period. Tyler Barr also received credit for the assist.

The Mississippi Surge tied the game later in the frame. Anthony Battaglia took a feed from Nicholas Kuqali and went top shelf at the 12:56 mark of the period. Mark Thorburn also assisted on the play.

Despite this loss, Kaminski is looking forward to Tuesday night's tilt against Pensacola, which will determine first place in the SPHL standings.

"This is what hockey's all about. The bigger games, the better. This is where we have to put together our best 60 minutes of the year. We need to pride the little things in our plan, and we have to have an unbelievable work ethic.

"This is the fun part of the season. Who's going to bend, and who's going to break? The cream will rise to the top."
