Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

Knoxville, TN - The Ice Bears returned to the Knoxville Coliseum ice and four Knoxville rookies scored en route to a 7-1 win over the Columbus Cottonmouths Friday night.

Rookie Phil Bronner recorded two goals and two assists and Ben Power added a goal and two assists.

Despite being outshot in the first period, Knoxville started the scoring early. After Columbus was called for two penalties in 52 seconds, the Ice Bears began a five-on-three power play.

Puck movement in the offensive zone allowed defenseman Mark Van Vilet scored the first goal of the 2013 exhibition season. Fellow defenseman and new Ice Bear Jason Price assisted Van Vilet's goal.

In the second period, scoring was aplenty. Knoxville tallied five goals, including three in the span of 3:16 minutes.

The Ice Bears' scoring was started by rookie Ben Power's slapshot from the blue line.

Phil Bronner's one-timer goal from the left sideboard and Nick Metcalfe's slapshot would add to the scoring streak and extend the Ice Bears' lead to 4-0.

Later in the period, Knoxville would add another goal from Bronner to push the advantage to 5-0 before the Cottonmouths could respond.

Columbus added a goal of its own with Jordan Zalba's goal at the 16:25 mark.

At the 18:01 mark of the period, Knoxville's Eric Satim pushed the Ice Bears' lead to 6-1.

In the third period, Knoxville successfully killed a five-on-three penalty with 11 minutes left in the game.

Ben Scheoneberger got into the scoring column to push the Ice Bears' lead to 7-1 in the third period.

Despite the win, Knoxville was outshot 31-27.

Hince saved all 13 of the shots he faced in the game, before Cody Rosen relieved him in the second period. Rosen recorded 17 saves on 18 shots.

The Ice Bears return to their home ice on November 1st to begin the home portion of the season as defending SPHL champions, the Pensacola Ice Flyers, visit the Knoxville Coliseum.
