Ice Bears' Satim Notches Two Goals in Win

January 11, 2013 - SPHL (SPHL)
Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears have extended their streak of securing at least one point in the standings for nine consecutive games by defeating the Mississippi Surge 3-1 - the longest in the SPHL for the 2012-13 season.

Mississippi jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal scored by Jay Silvia at 7:12 of the first period when he walked out from the corner and backhanded the puck underneath Ice Bears goaltender, Peter Skoggard. The Ice Bears pressed to draw even for the remainder of the period but failed to find the back of the net.

Knoxville came out with considerably more jump as they peppered Mississippi's backstopper Kiefer Smiley from the drop of the puck. Eric Satim scored as he outworked the entire Surge team by dumping the puck into the corner, chasing it down, winning the battle in the corner then wrapping the puck around from behind the net. Smiley made the first save but after a flurry of activity, the puck bounced back to Satim who buried it to knot the game at one.

Satim's night wasn't finished. After serving two minutes for slashing, he jumped back on the ice to kill the remainder of the Brett Valliquette penalty, Satim ripped a shot past Smiley from a 2-on-1 off a Tyler Fernandez pass to take the lead at 13:42 of the second period. The Ice Bears held the Surge to only 5 shots to keep them off the board to take a 2-1 lead into the locker room after 40 minutes of play.

The third period saw Knoxville carry the bulk of the play in the Surge zone for a large portion of the final 20 minutes of the game. Despite numerous opportunities, it wasn't until 15:08 of the third when Emery Olauson blistered a one timer from the high slot on the power play to increase the lead to 3-1 and ultimately the victory.

The Ice Bears are back on home ice Saturday, January 12 for the annual Legends Night. The Knoxville Ice Bears will host the Columbus Cottonmouths at 7:30 pm. Prior to the main event, legends of Knoxville will participate in an exhibition at 5:00 where players from the Ice Bears, Speed, Cherokees and Knights will showcase their talents. The U18 Knoxville Jr. Ice Bears will host the Nashville Jr. Predators at 2:30. All games are at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum and one ticket will give you access to all three games.
