Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears were seeking payback against Huntsville after the Havoc handed them a tough loss on Saturday. Although the Ice Bears dominated the first period and played an aggressive game, they couldn't overpower the Havoc and lost for the second time in a week against Huntsville, 5-3.

Mark Van Vliet drew cheers from the 2,011 fans at the Civic Coliseum when he threw down his gloves to tangle with Huntsville's Ryan Kretzer just 18 seconds after the puck dropped.

Brett Valliquette kept the energy up and grabbed an early lead for the Ice Bears just 3:25 into the first period with help from Mike Bulawka and Jon Higgins.

The Ice Bears increased their lead to 2-0 when Emery Olauson caught the puck from Frank Furdero and shot it past Havoc goalie Mark Sibbald on a power play. Huntsville saw their first goal of the night with 1:35 left of first period play scored by Brent Clarke. The Ice Bears led 2-1 skating into the second period.

Just 2:36 into the second period, Huntsville tied the game at 2 with a goal by Kretzer. Eleven minutes later, Huntsville took their first lead of the game with a goal by Kyle Laughlin. The Ice Bears went into the locker room for the second intermission trailing 2-3.

Huntsville's Omar Pacha increased the Havoc lead to 4-2 when he slid the puck past Hince. The Ice Bears answered 5 minutes later when Furdero fed the puck to Bulawka with a quick shot.

After being taken down by Mike MacDonald, Furdero was granted a penalty shot with less than 5 minutes remaining in the game, but Sibbald was able to keep it from the net. The game ended with an empty net goal by Glenn Detulleo, sealing the Havoc win at 5-3.

The Knoxville Ice Bears will return to the ice Friday at 7:30 p.m. to take on heated rivals the Fayetteville FireAntz. Join the Ice Bears as they break their home losing streak and host the third annual Baby Derby.
