WEEK IN REVIEW
Thursday, January 29 - Winston-Salem 3 at Knoxville 2
The Ice Bears came out ready to play. However, their best efforts fell short in overtime Thursday night. With just 27 seconds left in overtime, T-Bird Frantisek Bakrlik slid the puck by Knoxville goalie Blaine Russell to give the T-Birds the win in overtime. Alex Alepin and Tom McMonagle were the only two Bears to score against Winston-Salem goalie Adam Barbour. Knoxville plays Winston-Salem again on February 19 in Winston-Salem.
Friday, January 30 - Knoxville 2 at Huntsville 4
The Huntsville Channel Cats continued their dominance of the Ice Bears in Huntsville on Friday night. Chris Bodnar and K.J. Voorhees were the only two Ice Bears to tally a goal against the Cats. The penalty minutes were relatively low (18 for the Ice Bears, 16 for the Cats) compared to what it would be the next night when the Bears took on the Cats in a rematch in Knoxville.
Saturday, January 31 - Huntsville 6 at Knoxville 2
The bad blood between the Cats and the Bears finally boiled over on Saturday night in front of a record crowd (4142). At the end of the game, the Ice Bears had 72 penalty minutes to the Cats' 58. Alex Alepin, Todd MacIsaac and Brad McDonald all received game misconducts and were ejected from the game. Blaine Russell played the first two periods for the Bears until he took himself out of the game and was replaced by rookie goalie Kevin Block. The defense stepped up its game in the third and held Cats to only five shots. Todd MacIsaac and Tom McMonagle each scored a goal for the Bears. Knoxville plays Huntsville again in Huntsville on February 6.
