Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
Knoxville, TN - (January 31, 2013) The Knoxville Ice Bears fell to the Fayetteville FireAntz 3-2, in front of an energized crowd of 2,117.
The two teams started slow with neutral zone play for the first 10 minutes of the first period. 12:02 into the period Brett Valliquette took a cross-checking penalty, which allowed Fayetteville's Brandon Richardson to capitalize with a power play goal at 12:39.
The Ice Bears followed with a league leading eighth power play goal by captain David Segal at 14:16 to even the score at one. The play started with a face off win in the offensive zone. Passes to the point and across set up a shot by Jon Higgins and the rebound was poked in by Segal. Nate Peterson also received an assist. Fayetteville ended the period with a goal on a fluttering shot by Derek Elliott to beat goaltender Peter Skoggard.
Penalties dictated most of the second period. Both teams had five on three power play opportunities on which Knoxville capitalized, while Fayetteville could not. Mark Van Vliet blasted a shot from the point, which resulted in a rebound that was wristed in by Tyler Fernandez to knot the score at two.
The third period continued the theme of a penalty dominated game. The FireAntz capitalized on a powerplay for the second time taking a 3-2 lead at 2:42 by Bobby Reed. The Ice Bears ended the game in a flurry of chances, including multiple power plays. The final push came up short in the final seconds with six on four opportunities.
