Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears played a rematch against the Mississippi RiverKings tonight at the Civic Coliseum. A crowd of 2,977 Ice Bears fans who came to witness the nationally recognized "Christmas Sweater" jerseys. Despite the festive apparel, the RiverKings were able to sweep the weekend series with a win 5-2.
Mississippi saw the first power play opportunity when Peter Neal went to the box for high sticking 3:48 minutes in. The Ice Bears shut down the power play and jumped on the board early when John Higgins wristed a rocket in the top corner to notch a short-handed, unassisted goal.
The Ice Bears entered second period leading the RiverKings 1-0. Halfway through the period the RiverKings made it a tied game. Two minutes later Mississippi took the lead.
Mississippi was given a 5-on-3 advantage when Jeremy Klaver and Higgins were both in the penalty box. The RiverKings fought through Ice Bears' defense and ended the second period leading 3-1.
The Ice Bears closed the gap 6:19 minutes into the third period. Neal passed the puck to Eric Satim from behind the net. Satim roofed a shot to bring the score to 2-3. A ndrew Himelson was credited with the second assist.
At 7:23 Mississippi increased their lead to 4-2 on a breakaway shot. Mississippi scored their final goal on a power play and left Knoxville winless for the weekend.
The Ice Bears will be back on home ice Thursday, Dec. 26. Puck drops at 7:30 against the Huntsville Havoc. It's another $1,000 Thursday at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum.
