DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (45-56) and Toledo Mud Hens (51-49) split their doubleheader, Wednesday at Principal Park. Toledo took the first game by a score of 5-4 and Iowa got their first win of the series with an 8-3 victory in game two.
After four home runs in game one of the series last night, Toledo opened the scoring in game one of their doubleheader today with a three-run blast in the top of the second inning. They piled on with an RBI single in the top of the third and a solo home run from John Valente in the top of the fourth.
Trailing 5-0, Iowa got a pair of home runs of their own, with John Hicks and Nelson Maldonado each going deep. Narciso Crook brought in a fourth run for the I-Cubs on an RBI single to make it 5-4 in the fifth inning.
Unfortunately for Iowa, Nick Vincent and Miguel Del Pozo combined to throw 2.2 scoreless innings allowing just two hits to close out a 5-4 victory for Toledo.
With their 2-0 lead in the series entering game two of the doubleheader, the Mud Hens once again scored first, getting an RBI single in the first inning from Kerry Carpenter.
Andrelton Simmons tied the game in the home half of the first with a solo home run and the I-Cubs took their first lead of the day in the second. Trent Giambrone and Levi Jordan hit back-to-back home runs followed by an RBI single from Alfonso Rivas to bring Iowa's lead to 4-1.
Josh Lester clubbed a two-run shot in the third for the Mud Hens to make it a one-run game, but Brendon Little would shut Toledo down from there. Little spun 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out one.
Iowa added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single from Darius Hill to go up 5-3. They scored three more in the sixth, and Ben Leeper spun two scoreless innings to earn Iowa their first win of the series.
