Hudson Valley Renegades (33-32) vs. Winston-Salem Dash (33-32)
RHP Blas Castaño (1-5, 3.31 ERA) vs. RHP Cristian Mena (First Start)
| Game 66 | Road Game 36 | Truist Stadium | Winston-Salem, N.C. | June 23, 2022 | First Pitch 7 p.m. |
IT'S REALLY A HYPHEN: The Hudson Valley Renegades continue the second leg of their two-week, 12-game road trip tonight as they take on the Winston-Salem Dash, the High-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. This is the lone series of the season between Hudson Valley and Winston-Salem, after the clubs met for one six-game set in 2021. Last year, the Renegades and Dash split their series at Truist Stadium.
THIS IS THE END (OF THE FIRST HALF): Thursday night marks the 66th game of the regular season and the official end of the first half of the South Atlantic League schedule. Friday begins a new slate, with team records wiped clean and a fresh start for everyone around the league. The Aberdeen IronBirds and Bowling Green Hot Rods have already clinched playoff spots by winning their respective divisions in the first half, and they await the second half division winners in the South Atlantic League Playoffs in September.
SO, ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Renegades held off a furious late rally by the Dash on Wednesday night, hanging on for a 4-3 win. Carlos Narvaez gave the Renegades an early lead with a two-run home run in the top of the second, and Hudson Valley tacked on two more in the fifth to go up 4-0. Matt Sauer was solid, throwing 6.0 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out six. Nelson Alvarez turned in 2.0 scoreless relief innings, but Ryan Miller struggled to close out the game in the ninth, allowing three runs (two earned) before striking out Ben Norman to end the game.
PEREIRA YARD WORK: Everson Pereira hit two home runs for the Renegades on Friday night, his fifth career multi-homer game. All four have come within the last calendar year, and four while a member of the Hudson Valley Renegades, including two this week. The two-homer game gave Pereira 20 home runs with Hudson Valley, making him just the second player in franchise history to hit 20 long balls with the team.
Pereira Career Multi-HR Games:
6/17/22 at Greensboro Grasshoppers
6/14/22 at Greensboro Grasshoppers
9/5/21 at Greensboro Grasshoppers -- 3 HR
8/12/21 vs. Jersey Shore BlueClaws
7/10/21 at Dunedin Blue Jays
GADES DIG THE LONG BALL: After hitting just 48 home runs in their first 57 games of the season, the Hudson Valley Renegades have hit 20 home runs on the current road trip. That represents a whopping 29.4% of the team's total home runs on the season in 12.3% of the team's games. The Gades have seen four players hit multiple home runs in a game (Everson Pereira 2x, Tyler Hardman and Carlos Narvaez), and on Friday hit a season-high six home runs in one game. Hardman and Pereira both hit four homers in the Greensboro series, while Narvaez has four total on the trip as well.
IN A PINCH: Catcher Carlos Narvaez hit a pinch-hit home run in the top of the 11th on Sunday, the second pinch-hit homer of the year for the Renegades. Tyler Hardman previously had one against Aberdeen on May 11. Those are the only two pinch-hit home runs that the Renegades have hit in the Portal Era (2005 - Present).
AIR-LOS: With his second inning home run on Wednesday, Carlos Narvaez has four home runs and nine RBIs in his last five games played. This surge comes after Narvaez had only two home runs and five RBIs in his first 36 games of the season.
SPEED DEMON: Cooper Bowman stole his 25th and 26th bases of the season on Sunday afternoon in Greensboro. That is the most steals in a single season by a Renegades player since Jake Fraley set the franchise record with 33 in 2016. Bowman has been successful in 10 straight tries since he was last caught, and is 39-for-43 (.907) on steals in his career.
BOWMAN HEATING BACK UP: Since last Wednesday's contest at Greensboro, infielder Cooper Bowman has been one of the hottest hitters in the Renegades lineup. He is batting a scorching .385/.452/.615 (10-for-26, 7 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 2 K, 4-4 SB) across six games, and has at least two hits in four of the six. Bowman is second on the team with 11 multi-hit games, trailing only Everson Pereira, who has 17.
HISTORIC THIEVES: The Renegades have stolen 126 bases on the season this year, already the third-highest total in team history. Hudson Valley's all-time franchise record is 149 in 2021, with 134 in 2009 sitting second for the time being. Infielder James Nelson has 31 career SB with HV, just two shy of Jake Fraley's franchise record.
ALVAREZ CLOSING IN ON RECORDS: Reliever Nelson Alvarez has his sights set on two of the Renegades all-time pitching records. He currently ranks tied for third all-time in total appearances with 46, just two shy of tying Oscar Bustillos and Jason Jimenez for the lead. Alvarez also has racked up seven wins out of the bullpen, which puts him just behind teammate Charlie Ruegger (8) for second on the all-time relief wins list, two shy of Mike Venafro's mark (9) set in 1995. Dubiously, Alvarez has issued 52 career walks with Hudson Valley, which ties him for fifth most, but he is still 41 shy of Rich Dorman's franchise mark of 93.
HARDMAN HEATING UP: After a slow start to the season, infielder Tyler Hardman has been swinging a hot bat lately, picking up hits in 16 of his last 19 games. The hot stretch has lifted his season batting line from .173/.279/.298 to .255/.333/.424, a 182-point jump in his OPS. The stretch was punctuated by his first career multi-homer game on 6/15 at Greensboro.
