Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN, NB --- Saint John Sea Dogs Head Coach Gerard Gallant announced today that New Brunswick natives and former professional hockey players Yvon Vautour and Marc Hussey have been added to the team's coaching staff as assistants.
"We're very pleased to be adding Yvon and Marc to our coaching staff," said Gallant. "In addition to having a strong connection with the city of Saint John they bring a wealth of hockey knowledge and experience to the Sea Dogs and they will both be of tremendous asset to our organization moving forward."
A native Saint Johner, Yvon Yautour skated in 204 NHL games during a nine-year professional career, compiling 26G-33A-59P-401PIM with the Colorado Rockies, New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils, and Quebec Nordiques. Following his playing days, Vautour led Saint John to an appearance in the 1998 Air Canada Cup as the Midget AAA squad's Head Coach. The now-52-year old also served as an Assistant Coach with the AHL's Saint John Flames for four years and spent one season behind the bench with the Saint John Scorpions (CEHL), guiding the team to an Alexander Cup Championship. Most recently, Vautour worked in the Vancouver Canucks organization as an amateur scout during the 2007-08 NHL season.
"Getting the chance to work with a great coaching staff in Saint John is a tremendous honour," says Vautour. "As a long-time opponent of his on the ice, I always admired the way Gerard Gallant played the game and I'm really looking forward to working alongside him with the Sea Dogs."
Originally from Chatham, NB, Marc Hussey enjoyed a standout major junior career as a defenseman with the Moose Jaw Warriors, Tri City Americans, and Medicine Hat Tigers. Following his successful tenure in the WHL, Hussey skated with the Canadian National Team for one season prior to embarking upon a lengthy professional career which included stops in the AHL (in Saint John, St. John's, and Fredericton) as well as the IHL and various European Leagues. The 35-year old worked as the Head Coach of the Saint John Vito's for the past two seasons, winning the NB/PEI Major Midget AAA League Coach of the Year Award in 2008.
"I'm extremely excited about this opportunity," says Hussey. "The Sea Dogs are a great organization which is clearly headed in the right direction. I'm very pleased to be a part of such a wonderful franchise."
The Sea Dogs also announced today that Video Coach Greg Leland will be returning to the team for the 2009-10 season, as will Goaltending Coach Jim Fleming.
