
Hurricans Start Strong, Take Down Pats

First Period
The "ËCanes stormed out of the gate early and potted a pair of goals 39-seconds apart. Axel Blomqvist tallied a powerplay goal at 14:32 from Russell Maxwell and Macoy Erkamps. Josh Derko scored the second goal for the visitors from Sam McKecknie. Pats backup goaltender Teagan Sacher relieved Hewitt of his duties. With 5:39 left in the opening frame, Stephenson scored a backdoor goal from Scheidl and Griffin Mumby to cu t the visitors' lead in half. In the final minutes of the first, Christoffer and Ryan Pilon were called for coincidental roughing minors. While the teams were 4-on-4, Jamal Watson increased the Canes' lead to 3-1. Watson's goal was assisted by Reid Duke. Pats Morgan Klimchuk and Maxwell were each called for separate minors with 31-seconds left in the first. The teams played out the remainder of the first period, 4-on-4.
Second Period
The Pats controlled the first 10-minutes of play, and dominated the Canes in the shot category, 13-5. At the 14:23 mark, Pats Marc McCoy scored on his second whack at the puck. McCoy's tally was assisted by Hak and Sylvegard. McCoy was immediately called for an unsportsmanlike conduct after his goal. Sacher made a pair of saves on the penalty kill, and the Pats easily killed off McCoy's minor. Penalties plagued both teams throughout the last half of the second period. Stephenson made a trip to the sin bin for holding at 8:11. The Canes' powerplay was short-lived, though, as Maxwell was called for goaltender interference 49-seconds later. Watson was given the gate for tripping at 5:53, which resulted in a Pats 5-on-3 man-advantage for 31-seconds. The Blue and White failed to convert on both their 5-on-3 and 5-on-4 chances. The Pats put up 22 shots to the Hurricanes' nine in the second frame, but trailed 3-2 after 40-minutes.
Third Period
The visitors increased their lead to two goals 6:13 into the final frame. McKechnie's tally was assisted by Derko and Brady Ramsay. The Pats had an opportunity to comeback in the game after McKechnie went to the box for holding. Their 4-on-3 powerplay would last for 1:32. The Canes' Pilon was called for delay of game to extend the Pats' man-advantage. No goals were scored by the Pats on their powerplays. Watson tallied his second goal of the game with 5:06 left in the third. His goal was unassisted. The Pats had a late-game powerplay opportunity, but failed to convert. Hurricanes goaltender Ty Rimmer stopped 48 shots on the night. The Pats fell to the Hurricanes 5-2 at the Brandt Centre.
