Huntsville Havoc Goes Blue for Melissa George Night
January 14, 2008 - SPHL (SPHL)
Huntsville Havoc News Release
The Huntsville Havoc is going blue for babies - premature babies, that is! When they take the ice on Saturday, February 2nd against the Columbus Cottonmouths, they'll set aside their usual red and black jerseys to wear special ones trimmed in baby blue, and bearing the logo of the Melissa George Neonatal Memorial Fund at Huntsville Hospital Foundation. After the game, they'll auction off these game-worn jerseys with all proceeds going to the fund to purchase a Giraffe OmniBed for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children. These state-of-the-art beds are for critically ill premature babies in the NICU, most weighing less than two pounds.
Last year, the Havoc wore jerseys trimmed in pink and raised $54,400 for the Melissa George Neonatal Memorial Fund. This year, they've added more features to Melissa George Night. Each Havoc player will use a pink stick during warm-ups. During the game, the Havoc will hold a silent auction, with each stick going to the highest bidder. In addition to this, the first 1000 fans who bring an item for the NICU will receive an action figurine of Havoc player Craig Bushey. Items needed include clothing, caps, booties and blankets for premature babies. Monetary donations will also be accepted.
The Melissa George Neonatal Memorial Fund is a special cause for the Huntsville Havoc. It's named in memory of the daughter of former Huntsville Channel Cats and Huntsville Tornado hockey player Chris George, and his wife, Amy, former WHNT-TV news anchor. Melissa and her twin sister Ann Catherine were born 14 weeks early in 2005. Melissa passed away in the NICU and Ann Catherine spent the first 68 days of her life there. 100% of what is raised through the Melissa George Neonatal Memorial Fund is used to purchase lifesaving equipment for the NICU and to provide support for families of premature infants.
