Houston Dynamo FC News Release
The Houston Dynamo opened their CONCACAF Champions League campaign in grand fashion on Wednesday, securing a 3-1 road win over C.D. FAS at Estadio Cucatlan in San Salvador, El Salvador. With headed goals from Brian Ching, Cam Weaver and Je-Vaughn Watson, the Dynamo begin the group stage with a vital road win, their first-ever victory in Central America.
After round one of the group stage, the Dynamo are tied with Olimpia of Honduras for first place in Group 3, with three points. The Dynamo meet Olimpia on Aug. 30 in Honduras, the next group stage game for both clubs.
The Dynamo seized the early advantage after 12 minutes, with Ching rising to meet a cross from Colin Clark for a header from six yards for a 1-0 Dynamo lead.
It was Ching's sixth international goal to tie Stuart Holden for the franchise record. It was also Ching's 27th international appearance for the Dynamo, to move into a tie for second on the franchise list.
Seven minutes later Weaver doubled the Dynamo lead, using his height to head home a cross from Kofi Sarkodie for a commanding 2-0 lead.
It was Weaver's second career Champions League goal and the first Champions League assist for Sarkodie, who was making his CCL debut.
15 minutes after halftime, Watson completed the header trifecta, burying a corner kick from Nate Sturgis for the third Dynamo goal and his first career Champions League tally in his CCL debut.
FAS showed pride by fighting its way back into the game over the final half hour. It began with Jonathan Aguila, who entered as a substitute in the 64th minute and scored moments later, securing a loose ball in the six-yard box and cleverly lofting it into the net.
Dynamo goalkeeper Tyler Deric, making his Champions League debut, made two big saves in the second half to ensure the win. With the score 2-0 in the 53rd minute, he dove to his left to stop a low, hard shot from Alexander Larin. Eight minutes before full time, Deric produced a sensational save, again on Larin, as he dove high and far to his right to parry Larin's shot wide.
The Dynamo will resume Major League Soccer action on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against Toronto FC at BBVA Compass Stadium. Tickets are still available at www.HoustonDynamo.com, by calling (713) 276-GOAL or at the stadium box office (2200 Texas St., Houston) from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday-Friday and noon through kickoff on Saturday.
Houston then returns to CCL action with its second group stage game, Aug. 30 at Olimpia's Estadio Tiburcio Carias Andino in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
