Houston Dynamo FC News Release
HOUSTON, TX (Thursday, July 23, 2009) -- The Houston Dynamo are teaming up with the Nothing but Nets campaign to help stop the spread of malaria in Africa.
Dynamo fans will have the chance to help the cause by purchasing a $20 ticket to the Dynamo vs. New England Revolution game this Saturday, July 25. The Dynamo will donate $10 from each ticket sold to Nothing But Nets, who will then provide families with bed nets. These tickets are available at HoustonDynamo.com/nets.
Consul generals from three African countries were on hand at the Dynamo offices Thursday afternoon to announce the initiative. Charles R. Greene, representing Cameroon; Marlene McClinton, representing Côte d'Ivoire; and Jack Webb, representing Ghana, all pledged their support to the program.
"It's a big deal in Africa," Dynamo midfielder Corey Ashe said. "I have friends who have been affected and know people with friends who have been affected. ... I want to encourage people to take the initiative and save a life. It's as easy as buying a ticket."
The bed nets provided to families work by creating a protective barrier against mosquitoes at night, when the vast majority of transmissions occur. Each $10 donation covers the cost of purchasing a net, delivering it to a family, and educating the family on its proper use.
"As coach of the team, I love the event we have," Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear said. "I think the numbers are staggering, and if we can do a little bit to make those numbers come down and help those children live happier and longer lives, I think we've done our best."

ABOUT NOTHING BUT NETS
Nothing But Nets is a grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. While the UN Foundation has been working with the UN to fight malaria for years, it was a column that Rick Reilly wrote about malaria in Sports Illustrated, challenging each of his readers to donate at least $10 for the purchase of an anti-malaria bed net -- and the incredible response from thousands of Americans across the country -- that led to the creation of the Nothing But Nets campaign.
