HOUSTON - Houston Dynamo FC opened the 2021 preseason with 2-0 victory over Austin Bold FC at BBVA Stadium earlier this afternoon. The preseason game was split into three 30-minute periods with unlimited substitutions.
Dynamo forward Darwin Quintero led the charge for the first goal of the encounter. The Colombian playmaker found Ari Lassiter out wide in the 13th minute of the third period. Lassiter's first-touch pass found Christian Ramirez inside the box for the first goal of the preseason.
Lassiter doubled Houston's lead six minutes later off a corner kick from Quintero at the far post. Lassiter's header crossed the line just before an Austin defender attempted to sweep it clear.
The scrimmage featured seven current and former Houston Dynamo Academy players. Current Academy forward Joyner Castillo and defenders Jathan Juarez and Kieran Sargeant joined Homegrown players Juan Castilla, Marcelo Palomino and Daniel Rios for two of the three periods this afternoon.
The first of three 30-minute periods finished in a 0-0 draw. Dynamo forward Tyler Pasher finished with three of the best chances of the period. Pasher's cross skipped past Austin goalkeeper Hugo Fauroux in the 11th minute, but a defender put a toe to the ball, knocking it just clear of a sliding effort from Dynamo forward Fafa Picault inside the six-yard box. Two minutes later Pasher got behind the backline but his cross was cleared by the Bold defense.
Pasher forced a save in the 25th minute after he dribbled past two defenders into the box. The Dynamo forward's effort was saved at the near post by Faroux. The final opportunity of the first period came off the right foot of Dynamo Academy alum Memo Rodriguez. The Dynamo midfielder's effort from the top of the box hit the woodwork in the 30th minute.
Dynamo forward Mateo Bajamich forced a point-blank save from the Austin shot stopper in the 25th minute of the second period. The Argentine forward got on the end of a cross from Lassiter, but Fauroux forced a one-touch shot that bounced off his torso.
The Dynamo will continue their preparations for the 2021 regular season on Wednesday, March 24 when they travel to College Station to take on FC Tulsa at Ellis Field, the home of Texas A&M Soccer. That match is free and open to the public, with kickoff set for 4 p.m. CDT.
