Houston Dynamo, BBVA Compass Launch 'Building a Better Mind' at the Rusk School

HOUSTON (Tuesday, May 1, 2012) - The Houston Dynamo and BBVA Compass launched its Building a Better Mind initiative today. The program will provide reading and financial literacy lessons this week at The Rusk School in Houston's East End as part of their Building a Better Mind campaign.

Dynamo players Colin Clark, Adam Moffat, Brian Ownby and Nathan Sturgis, along with BBVA Compass and Dynamo officials, read to students in kindergarten through second grade. The event is part of BBVA Compass' literacy program, Reading Counts, which promotes the importance of reading to children and provides free books to students.

"We want to be involved in our community and with the help of our players and BBVA Compass officials, we have tried to make an impact at The Rusk School," said Dynamo President Chris Canetti. "This is the start of a long commitment we have made to this neighborhood."

Teach Children to Save lessons will be taught by BBVA Compass and Dynamo officials all week at The Rusk School. The lessons make learning about money fun and allow bankers to help students understand the basic principles of using money wisely.

"Literacy and vocabulary are essential to success in school and life," said Tiffany Dunne, executive vice president of Corporate Communications and Corporate Responsibility for BBVA Compass. "Our Reading Counts program aims to improve literacy and build vocabulary, especially among children who live in low-income neighborhoods."

Dunne was one of four BBVA Compass executives who read to students on Tuesday.
