Houston Dash News Release
HOUSTON - The Houston Dash signed Swedish international Elin Rubensson following a transfer from BK Häcken for an agreed upon transfer fee between both clubs, the team announced today. Rubensson has joined the Dash ahead of the 2024 NWSL regular season, which begins later this week in North Carolina.
Rubensson, who is signed through 2025, will make the transcontinental move to the Space City after playing a majority of her illustrious career in the top Swedish league (Damallsvenskan). The midfielder played 113 career matches for BK Häcken, making 106 starts and scoring 34 goals.
"Elin is a proven leader for club and country, and a player with tremendous talent. Coming off of an impressive World Cup, she is a dynamic engine, with the ability to read the game defensively and control the tempo in possession as well as score goals. We're thrilled to welcome Elin and her family to the Dash.
While with BK Häcken, Rubensson led the club to its first league title in team history during the 2020 season. During the last six seasons with the club, Rubensson helped BK Häcken remain as one of the top two teams in the Damallsvenskan and helping the team to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.
From 2010 to 2014 Rubensson played for FC Rosengård where she helped the team to four Damallsvenskan titles. Winning back-to-back championships in 2010, 2011, and 2013 and 2014. FC Rosengård and Rubensson finished the 2012 season as the league runners-up.
"I'm excited to be here in Houston and I'm looking forward to get started with my new team," Rubensson said. "This is a great adventure for me and my family. We are really looking forward to getting to know the city and the people. The Dash is the right place for me to develop and take the next step in my career. I can't wait for the season to start and play in front of our fans!"
On the international level, Rubensson has been a mainstay of the Swedish Women's National Team since making her senior team debut in 2012. The midfielder has made 87 career appearances at the senior level, debuting in October of 2012 and appearing in all four matches of the 2015 World Cup as well as all six matches at the 2016 Summer Olympics, winning Silver Medal. At the 2019 World Cup, she started all matches.
The midfielder played in every match of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup and was key in helping Sweden win a bronze medal following a 2-0 win over Australia. Rubensson made six starts in seven appearances in the competition, with starts against the Spain, United States and Japan in the knockout stage. Rubensson converted from the spot in a thrilling 5-4 shootout win over the United States in the Round of 16, which sent the back-to-back defending World Cup champion home.
