Houston Comets News Release

HOUSTON (February 20, 2008) - The Houston Comets have signed guard Mwadi Mabika to a one-year contract, it was announced today by Head Coach & General Manager Karleen Thompson. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Mwadi adds another layer of veteran leadership to our team," said Coach Thompson. "An athlete of her caliber strengthens our overall perimeter shooting and she can create opportunities for our post players which is key to our success on the court."

Mabika was signed by the WNBA and assigned to Los Angeles on May 22, 1997. She spent the first 11 years of her WNBA career as a starter for the Los Angeles Sparks contributing to that team's championships in 2001 and 2002. A two-time WNBA All-Star, Mabika has gathered career totals of 3,480 points, 1,290 rebounds and 761 assists. Over her WNBA career, Mabika has averaged 10.9 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists.

Coach Thompson added, "I had the privilege of working with Mwadi during my time in L.A. and I know she has the heart of a champion. She brings a fight that you can't teach. It's the type of spirit we'll need in our drive for our next WNBA Championship."

"I can't wait," said Mabika. "I've played with the same team for 11 years and now to have a new opportunity with a new team is exciting. Starting from training camp, I want to offer my leadership experience and the mental toughness that I know teams need to be successful."

A native of Congo, Mabika came to the United States by way of a personal appeal made to Zairian Government officials by compatriot and NBA star Dikembe Mutombo and his brother Tshitingo.

The Houston Comets begin their inaugural season in Reliant Arena on May 27 at 7:30 p.m. against the Minnesota Lynx. Season and group tickets are available for purchase by calling 713-627-WNBA. Learn more information about the Houston Comets by visiting www.houstoncomets.com.
