Two Close Calls but Hounds Stay Perfect

The Youngstown SteelHounds were able to fend off defeat with two hard fought victories over the weekend. Saturday night the Hounds jumped out to a 2-0 second period lead against the Corpus Christi Rayz. In the third period though the Hounds gave up two power play goals, one from Geno Parrish to tie the game at two and force a shootout. The shootout was tied at two after five rounds and went to sudden death. In the seventh round Petr Pohl put the puck past Jason Tapp to give the Hounds their third straight victory. Sunday afternoon against the Texas Brahmas started fast with Justin Kinnunen scoring at just 1:05 into the game to give the Brahmas a 1-0 lead. Chris Shaffer tied the game just 29 seconds later off a pretty pass from Bryan Lachapelle. In the second period it was Milan Maslonka scoring his first goal of the season at 11:21 to give the Hounds a 2-1 lead. The rest was left to Andy Franck who made 26 saves on 27 shots to give the Hounds a 2-1 win and move them to 4-0-0.

What's on Tap: Four Games in Six Nights

The Hounds continue the longest road trip in CHL history as they will play four games in six nights. The Hounds take on the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs tonight at 8:05 on ESPN Radio 1240. Friday night it is up to Kansas to take on the Wichita Thunder at 8:05. Saturday night the Hounds go back south to play the Austin Ice Bats at 8:38pm. Friday and Saturday's games will be on WSOM AM 600. Sunday afternoon it is another 4:05 matinee when the Hounds visit the Corpus Christi Rayz on ESPN Radio 1240. No radio, no problem as all Hounds games are also available on SteelHounds.com.

Can Set a Team Record Tonight

With a win tonight the Youngstown SteelHounds will set a new team record for best start to a season with five. The Hounds win on Sunday tied the record set by the 2006-07 squad. Youngstown remains one of three teams that are still undefeated.

The Net is in Good Hands

Andy Franck is continuing his strong play and improving his numbers. Over the weekend the Lakewood, Ohio native made 60 saves on 63 shots and now has a 1.96 goals against average and a .940 save percentage. Franck ranks fourth in the Central Hockey League for both categories.

Coach Wanted Depth

One of Kevin Kaminski's biggest needs from the off-season was to add depth to his roster. In four games there are currently 13 of sixteen skaters who have registered at least one point. Kevin Jarman, Gord Burnett, Petr Pohl, Chris Shaffer and Milan Maslonka all knocked in their first goals of the season over the weekend. Bryan Lachapelle and Adam Smyth registered assists to get onto the stat sheet. Chris Richards leads the team with seven points.

Monster for Halloween

Over the weekend Hounds defenseman Stephen Margeson was called up to the American Hockey League's Lake Erie Monsters. The Monsters are based out of Cleveland and are the top affiliate to the NHL's Colorado Avalanche. This is the second call up for the native of Banff, Alberta as last season he was called to the Blue Jackets AHL affiliate in Syracuse, New York.

Dulle Signs

With Margeson leaving for the AHL it left the Hounds with only five defensemen. Head Coach Kevin Kaminski brought in Kurtis Dulle. Dulle, 27, was traded to Youngstown from Tulsa as part of the deal that sent Jeff Christian to the Oilers. Last season the fourth year pro from Craik, Saskatchewan had seven goals, 33 assists and 113 penalty minutes while splitting time with Rio Grande Valley and Tulsa.
