Midland RockHounds News Release
Entering this four-game series, the Corpus Christi Hooks (a) had the Texas League's best record at 35-21 and (b) the league's best home record (20-8). After Jake Buchanan led the Hooks to a 9-4 win in the series opener (improving his record to 7-0, with a Minor League Baseball best 0.85 ERA), the 'Hounds came back to win games two and three by scores of 3-1 and 14-4.
Friday, the Hooks put their foot down (if, indeed, Hooks have feet) to win the finale, 5-0, gaining a split of the series.
The Hooks scored all five runs in the second inning, with a pair of walks from starter Carlos Hernandez lighting the fuse, followed by an error and three hits. Jose Martinez' two-run single capped the five-run rally.
The Hooks had just four hits in the game, and only one after the second inning, but the five-run second was "the ballgame."
Corpus Christi's outstanding tandem of David Martinez and Mike Foltynewicz combined on a two-hit shutout, with Martinez improving to 9-0. Foltynewicz, perhaps Houston's top pitching prospect, touched 100 mph on the radar gun while collecting his third save (with a 1.08 ERA).
Anthony Aliotti and Beau Taylor had the 'Hounds base hits (there were only six hits, combined, in the game).
