San Antonio Missions News Release
San Antonio's hopes for a South Division, first-half title were dealt a serious blow in a 5-1 loss to Corpus Christi Saturday night at Wolff Stadium.
Josh Geer got the ball for the Missions in his second spot-start of the season. His night got off to a rough start, with leadoff hitter George Springer reaching on a fielding error by Jake Blackwood. Springer later scored on a sacrifice fly by MLB rehabber Justin Maxwell.
The Hooks took advantage of another Blackwood error the following inning to score the first of two runs, pushing their lead to 3-0.
Corpus Christi got solo homers from Domingo Santana (11th) and Rene Garcia (3rd) off reliever Matt Lollis in the sixth to open up a commanding 5-0 lead.
The Missions had no answers for the pitching tandem of Carlos Quevedo (2-4) and Jake Buchanan (first save), who combined on a five-hitter. Buchanan was one out away from pitching the Hooks to their second straight shutout (and franchise-record 11th), but a fielding error by third baseman Jonathan Meyer allowed Blackwood to score from third for the final margin.
San Antonio hurlers had a good night in defeat, matching a season-high with 12 strikeouts. Kevin Quackenbush fanned all four batters he faced, tying a season-high for a Mission reliever. Geer (2-3) took the loss but pitched well, allowing just one earned run on seven hits in his five innings of work.
The Missions (32-28) now trail the first-place Hooks (38-23) by 5.5 games with nine to play in the first half. The two clubs meet again Sunday in game two of their four-game series. First pitch is slated for 6:05 PM, with the first 500 kids 12 & under receiving a free Puffy Taco picture courtesy of Kellogg's.
