Midland RockHounds News Release
MIDLAND, TX - Game three of a four-game series between the RockHounds and Corpus Christi Hooks was ... in a word ... "unusual."
After a 1-0 pitcher's duel Friday and Anthony Aliotti's electrifying, eight-RBI game in Saturday's 12-4 RockHounds win, the clubs committed as many errors as runs scored Sunday afternoon, with the Hooks claiming a 5-3 win.
The 'Hounds were the "guiltier" (pardon the grammar) of the clubs, committing a half-dozen miscues. The Hooks had two "official" errors and also lost a ball in the sun in the last of the first, resulting in a two-out double to the base of the wall in left for Aliotti. Jake Goebbert then ripped a line drive, 400-plus-foot line drive home run onto the grass berm in right-center, giving the RockHounds a 2-0 lead.
The Hooks took the lead for good at 3-2 on Erik Castro's two-run home run down the right field line in the fourth.
The Hooks built the lead to 5-2 in the seventh, but the 'Hounds answered with a run in the home half of the inning, cutting the lead to 5-3. Conner Crumbliss led off the eighth with a double, but the 'Hounds could push him no farther than third base.
David Martinez pitched through the fifth to earn his league-leading seventh win. The right-hander is a perfect 7-0 with a 2.00 ERA. Astros prospect Mike Foltynewicz, pitching in Houston's "piggy back start" system, pitched the final three innings for the save,
South Division
The San Antonio-Frisco game was not yet final, but the Hooks will lead the winner of that game by two and the loser by three, with the RockHounds falling five games behind Corpus Christi.
Kibbles & Bits
- Crazy stat du jour: Corpus Christi's #3 and #4 hitters (George Springer and Domingo Santana) combined for this very unusual batting line. In 10 plate appearances ... 0-for-8, walked twice, scored one run, reached on errors three times, advanced on errors twice, stole four bases (all by Springer) and committed batter's interference.
- Anthony Aliotti extended his on-base streak to 16 games. In that span, the RockHounds' first baseman is hitting .439 (25-of-57) with an OBP of .529 (on-base in 36-of-68). "Ali" leads the Texas league with a .373 batting average.
- D'Arby Myers had a double Sunday, and is 13-for-31 (.419) in his last eight games and 11-for-24 (.440) in his last six.
- Chad Oberacker has now hit in 9-of-10 games, going 14-for-39 (.359) in that stretch. "Obie" also "bucked the trend" Sunday afternoon, making a brilliant, diving catch in right-center field.
- The RockHounds and Corpus Christi continue their four-game series Monday evening at 6:30.
- The RockHounds ... in the midst of playing 14-of-18 games on the road ... then pack the bags one more time, traveling to Tulsa, Oklahoma and Springfield, Missouri for what will be on a six-game, seven-day road trip (May 21-27).
