San Antonio - The San Antonio Missions are proud to announce that outfielder Kalian Sams has been named Texas League Player of the Week for May 13-19.

Sams had a monster week in his seven games for the Missions, hitting .308 (8-for-26) with five doubles, three homers, nine RBI, six runs scored and three steals. For the week, Sams led all TL hitters in total bases with 22, extra-base hits with eight, SLG at .846 and was tied for the league lead in doubles.

The 26-year-old native of the Netherlands, has become one of the biggest stories in all of MiLB since he joined San Antonio on May 5. In his debut vs. Corpus Christi, Sams homered twice, setting a new Missions' season-high with eight total bases, which he later matched on May 18 at Frisco. In just 12 games with the Missions, Sams has already moved into the team lead in homers with seven. Since his 2013 debut, Sams leads all MiLB hitters in SLG at 1.025, OPS at 1.515 and is tied for first in homers. He is also tied for second in RBI with 19. Amazingly, of his 14 hits this season, 13 have gone for extra bases, the third most at the MiLB level during that stretch.

This is the third Player of the Week award for Sams in his career, having been honored by the Class A Midwest League in June of 2011 and the Rookie-level Appalachian League in July of 2008.

Sams spent his first two professional seasons (2005-06) playing in the Dutch Major League. He was signed as a non-drafted free agent by Seattle on July 2, 2006 and spent the next six seasons in the Mariner organization, advancing as high as Double-A Jackson in 2012.

This past offseason, Sams played for the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic, hitting .238 with three doubles and three RBI over seven games. He helped the Netherlands stun Cuba 7-6 on March 11 when he drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

San Antonio wraps up an eight-game road trip this morning in Frisco before returning to Wolff Stadium on Wednesday for a showdown with the Arkansas Travelers (Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim). First pitch is set for 7:05 PM on Military Appreciation Night presented by Dr Pepper.
