
Horsemen defense earns UIF honor

LEXINGTON, Ky., June 23, 2005 - Just one week after the Horsemen's William Mulder received the United Indoor Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week honor, he was joined by the Lexington defensive secondary. The Horsemen secondary of Mulder, Champ Kelly, Brian Landis, Leonard Burress, and J.T. Haskins earned the UIF's Week 14 Defensive Players-of-the-Week award. The five Horsemen combined for five interceptions, 16 tackles, and two pass breakups in a 58-41 win over the Fort Wayne Freedom last Saturday night.
The Horsemen lead the UIF in interceptions, tallying up 24 on the year and are third in pass defense rating. Mulder is tied for first in the league in interceptions, grabbing eight and Kelly is third with six.
Kelly is a versatile two-way player who can be an effective wide receiver and defensive back. In 2004 he played in 13 of the Horsemen's 14 games and made 26 tackles on the defensive end. In 2003, Kelly played in 13 games at defensive back, finishing with 17 passes defended on the season, tied for 8th-best in the NIFL. He also contributed 59.5 tackles on the season, third-most on the team.
In 2004, Mulder led the team in interceptions with 10 in the regular season, including five against Waco, in which three were returned for touchdowns. He also added four interceptions in the post season on the way to 2004 National Championship.
Landis was part of a Georgetown College team that competed in the 2000 National Championship game, where he was named defensive player of the game. He was named NAIA Defensive Player of the Week Dec. 16, 2000 and was named the defensive player of the game in the 2000 National Championship game.
Haskins is a strong player at the cornerback position known for his long and extensive range. He saw action in all 13 games his senior season at the University of Louisville, piling up 33 tackles on the year.
Burress was a four-year starter at cornerback for the University of Kentucky where he played 42 games for the Wildcats. He recorded 22 tackles his senior season for a total of 74 tackles in his career, including a personal-best 34 in his sophomore year. Burress also led the team in pass breakups his junior season with 10.
The Horsemen's finish the regular season with three games at Rupp arena, where the team is 4-1 on the year. Lexington will face Tennessee Valley Saturday, June 25 at 7:30 for "Kids Night", sponsored by Toys-R-Us and Gatti Town. The game will be carried live on Super Talk 96.1 FM with Gary Ball and Bill Ransdell.
