Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN- The Gary South Shore RailCats could not figure out the Sioux City Explorers' starting pitcher Lars Liguori on Monday night, falling 4-1 despite a quality spot start from Kagen Hopkins.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third as Logan Brumley singled to start the inning. With two outs, Drew Martinez singled to bring in Brumley and give the Cats a 1-0 lead. The rain came in the fourth inning to briefly delay the game, lasting just 14 minutes.
Both starters got back into their rhythms after the stoppage in play as the score remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth. Tim Colwell singled with two outs and Rene Tosoni drove him in with a double to tie the game. On a 3-0 pitch, Andres Perez came through with a base hit out to center field to score Tosoni and give the Explorers a 2-1 advantage.
Liguori got through 6.2 innings before allowing a walk to Brumley. He was then lifted for Kenny Long who induced a flyout from Drew Muren to end the inning. In the next half inning, with two outs, Peter Barrows lifted a two-run homer off Ian Kadish to put the Explorers ahead 4-1. Long kept the Cats scoreless in the eighth and Geoff Broussard shut the door in the ninth to seal a 4-1 victory for Sioux City.
Hopkins took the tough loss, despite throwing 6.0 innings while allowing six hits and two earned runs. Muren set an American Association record for assists by an outfielder with nine. The RailCats and Explorers will play game two of the three game series on Tuesday night at 7:10. Dan Vaughan will be joined in the booth by Mike Woolf for the call on WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com/live.
