Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
STARS FROM MOODY, TAMUCC GET PRO NOD - Outfielder Alfred Joseph and pitcher Trey Hearne have enjoyed a great deal of success in their baseball careers, and both will be recognized for the outstanding seasons they had in 2006 at next week's South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet at the Omni Bayfront in Corpus Christi.
Joseph, a big part of Moody High's State 5A championship run in 2004, is the 2006 Professional Player of the Year. The starting right fielder and leading hitter for the Boise Hawks, Joseph's contributions enabled the Cubs affiliate to finish at 44-32 and qualify for the championship series in the Northwest League.
Hearne is the Professional Pitcher of the Year just one season after being selected as the South Texas Collegiate Pitcher of the Year for his exploits at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. In 2006, Hearne topped Quad Cities in both wins and ERA. His 2.25 ERA was also the best for all pitchers in the Cardinals organization. For more, click http://www.cchooks.com/news/?id=7223.
The Third Annual South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet is less than a week away! Set for next Wednesday in the Bayfront's Corpus Christi Ballroom, the banquet is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. Individual tickets and corporate table sponsorships can be reserved calling the Hooks at 361-561-HOOK (4665). Note: Please remember that when you buy a ticket to the banquet, you are also getting a ticket to the Houston Astros Caravan Luncheon!
LUNCHEON INFO - The Astros are putting the finishing touches on their Texas Winter Caravan plans, including arrangements for a visit to Corpus Christi. Details are expected very soon, so watch for them in your e-mail and on the Hooks website at www.cchooks.com.
WCC TIDBIT - Did you know that San Diego Padres catcher Josh Bard and Astros pitcher Chris Sampson were teammates at Texas Tech? Sampson, who pitched for the Hooks in 2005 and made his Major League debut this past season with Houston, came out of college as a shortstop.
Larry Hays' Red Raiders make their first appearance in the Whataburger College Classic this coming March, joining a field that includes number-one ranked Rice, TCU and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Watch for details on the Classic in the weeks ahead. The four-team tournament gets under way with a Homerun Derby on the evening of Thursday, March 8th.
WEBSITE POLL - There was brisk voting in response to this week's question concerning Roger Clemens and his plans for the 2007 season. A total of 234 ballots were counted, and 35% say they think the "Rocket" will retire. But nearly as many folks (32%) think Roger will re-sign with the Astros. Twenty-five percent of the respondents are of the opinion that Clemens will sign with the Yankees, and only 8% see him signing a contract with the Red Sox.
This week's question allows all you fantasy players out there to voice your opinion on the top producers in the game today. To log your entry, go to www.cchooks.com and scroll down the home page to find the poll.
