Hooks Take the 4th of July Series Finale

Corpus Christi, TX - The Corpus Christi Hooks swung to the 8-0 victory against the Springfield Cardinals before 9,185 fans at Whataburger Field on Friday night.

The Hooks (7-8, 41-44) cracked the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third against RHP Kurt Heyer (L, 3-6). With runners at the corners and one down, 3B Jonathan Meyer blooped an RBI single behind first base to score 2B Tony Kemp from third, lifting the Hooks into the 1-0 lead.

Corpus Christi doubled the advantage with another tally in the bottom of the fourth. 1B Brandon Meredith was hit by a pitch to open the inning, before racing around to third one out later on a single by C Tyler Heineman. After a fly out, Kemp struck with a two-out RBI single to bring home Meredith and stretch the advantage to 2-0.

The Hooks opened the advantage with a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth. Heyer retired the first two batters of the frame in a row, but DH M.P. Cokinos got on with a two-out single, extending the inning and chasing Heyer from the mound. After a walk issued by RHP Logan Billbrough, CF Delino DeShields, Jr. knocked in one run with an RBI single. A walk and an error led to another tally coming across, before a bases-loaded walk by LF Leo Heras later in the inning made it 5-0.

Corpus Christi stayed on the attack in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and one down, DeShields brought in two more with a two-run single to left field. After a pop out, Meyer capped the Hooks attack with an RBI single, stretching the lead to 8-0.

Hooks RHP Kyle Smith (W, 3-2) kept the Cardinals (5-10, 39-46) bats in check with six scoreless frames to log the win. LHP Mitchell Lambson then tossed a pair of scoreless relief innings, before RHP Travis Ballew dealt a scoreless ninth to close the 8-0 win for Corpus Christi.
