Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - The Hooks swept a three-game series from the San Antonio Missions on Wednesday night at Whataburger Field with a 3-2 victory in 10 innings. Anibal Sierra delivered the game-winning sac fly in the bottom of the tenth to score Ryne Birk.
Corpus Christi's Ryan Hartman tossed seven innings of two-run ball in a no decision. The lefty struck out 11 batters, matching a career-high. He allowed a leadoff single to Buddy Reed and then a sac fly to Kyle Overstreet as the Missions took a 1-0 lead in the first.
The Hooks responded immediately in the bottom half of the first when Ronnie Dawson tripled against righty Cal Quantrill to begin the game and came home on Stephen Wrenn's sac fly to tie the game at 1-1.
In the third, Randy Cesar blasted a solo homer to left field as the Hooks jumped out to a 2-1 edge. San Antonio's Kyle Overstreet responded with a solo shot of his own in the top of the fourth to even the score at 2-2.
Kit Scheetz replaced Ryan Hartman and tossed scoreless frames in eighth and ninth. The Missions' bullpen matched with Jason Jester and TJ Weir throwing two scoreless innings each.
The game entered the tenth still tied at 2-2 and with Scheetz on the mound. Ty France became San Antonio's automatic runner. Scheetz struck out Kyle Overstreet for the first out and the induced a pop out. Ralph Garza replaced Scheetz to throw a single pitch that turned into an inning ending ground out back to the mound.
Birk was Corpus Christi's automatic runner in the bottom half of the tenth and moved to third base on Lorenzo Quintana's fly ball to left field. Sierra then stepped in and lifted a deep fly ball to centerfield, allowing Birk to easily score the winning run.
The Hooks have won five games in a row. They begin a four-game series in Frisco, TX at Dr. Pepper Ballpark on Thursday night. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
