Hooks Survive Delay, Win Series
July 3, 2007 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
J.R. Towles and Edwin Maysonet both clubbed three-run, first-inning homers and German Melendez picked up the victory in his first professional start as Corpus Christi knocked off Tulsa 7-3 Monday night at Drillers Stadium.
The series finale was delayed two hours and 19 minutes by rain and subsequent power outage.
The Hooks, winners of three-consecutive road trips, improve to 5-6 in the second half and 36-45 overall.
Tulsa starter Franklin Morales (0-4) was chased with two outs in the first after Corpus Christi posted a 6-0 lead. Josh Flores led off with a walk and Drew Sutton chopped a grounder to short for an infield hit. Towles then blasted his sixth long ball of the season and second in as many nights, a majestic shot that cleared the stadium beyond left field.
With two away, Jonny Ash and Neil Sellers walked before Maysonet belted his third home run in 2007 to left center.
Following a rain delay of an hour and 25 minutes, Melendez (3-1), made the first start of his nine-year career in place of Ronnie Martinez, who was too ill to take the mound.
In his third year as a pitcher, Melendez faced two over the minimum through four innings. After a 54-minute, power-outage delay, the right-hander was touched for two runs in the fifth. Matt Miller reached on an error to open the frame and Jordan Czarniecki hammered a home run to left, pulling Tulsa (6-6, 41-41) within four.
Melendez lasted five innings and surrendered two runs-one earned-off two hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Ryan Thompson allowed a hit and struck out a batter over two innings. Brian Gordon yielded an RBI-double by Chris Frey in the eighth.
Corpus Christi answered in the ninth when Towles opened with a walk. Noochie Varner singled and Ray Sadler drove a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring the game's final run.
The Hooks have a day off tomorrow before beginning a seven-game, six-day homestand Wednesday with Wichita at 7:05. Greg Atencio (3-4) is scheduled to start for the Wranglers as Corpus Christi counters with lefty Josh Muecke (1-4).
