MIDLAND - Corey Brown homered and drove in two while Carlos Hernandez tossed six innings of one-run ball as Midland bested Corpus Christi 4-2 Friday night at Citibank Ballpark.

With Frisco's victory over San Antonio, the Hooks are 4.5 games out with 11 to play in the Texas League South first-half race.

The RockHounds (28-31) benefited from an early lead thanks to Brown's solo shot to right field in the first inning.

The Hooks (30-29) evened the score in the third. T.J. Steele reached on an error by shortstop Josh Horton to open the frame. With the next batter, J.B. Shuck, at the plate, Steele was able to go all the way to third when first baseman Jeff Baisley airmailed a throw into center field on an attempted pickoff. Shuck then scratched out an infield single to the left side of the diamond, allowing Steele to score the tying run.

Midland would add two more over the next four frames on run-scoring singles by Horton and Brown.

Jeremy Johnson (1-6), who suffered the loss, yielded three runs on nine hits over six innings. He walked three and fanned five.

Hernandez (5-1) was only touched for that unearned run, throwing 54 of his 82 pitches for strikes. The lefty walked two and did not strike out a batter.

Corpus Christi pushed across its final tally on reliever Mickey Storey in the seventh. Steele led off with a single and moved to second on a one-out walk by David Cook. Two batters later, pinch-hitter Jon Gaston served a line-drive into right field, scoring Steele and cutting Midland's advantage to one.

To begin the eighth, Adrian Cardenas hit a double into the right-field gap off Hooks reliever Jailen Peguero. Cardenas eventually reached third on a force play and scored via Gabriel Ortiz's sacrifice fly to center field.

Jared Lansford notched his seventh save of the season, striking out three over two frames.

The series finale is Saturday night when Jared Wells (3-1) takes on Midland lefty Anthony Capra (4-6). First pitch is 7:00.
