Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals were looking to snap their three game losing streak in the third game of their series with the Tulsa Drillers.
Cardinals' starter Chuckie Fick would run into trouble early in the top of the 1st inning by allowing the lead off hitter Charlie Blackmon to reach 1st base and then advancing him to 2nd base on an arrant pick off attempt. Eider Torres would then add to the early offensive pressure with an RBI triple to give the Drillers a quick 1-0 lead.
However, Fick would help his own cause in the bottom of the 2nd inning by hitting an RBI double that would chase the Drillers starter Greg Reynolds for Cory Riordan and make the score to 1-1. Daryl Jones would plate another run in the bottom of the 2nd inning with a RBI single to give the Cardinals to a 2-1 lead.
The Cardinals' bats would continue to produce in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Tyler Henley hit an RBI single that scored Matt Carpenter from 2nd base and brought the Cardinal lead to 3-1.
Tyler Henley lifted the Cardinals' offense again in the bottom of the 6th inning when he hit another RBI single to score Steven Hill from 2nd base and bring the score to 4-1. Cory Riordan would allow more offense by the Cardinals in the 6th inning when Tyler Henley scored on an RBI single by Pete Kozma making it a 5-1 ball game.
The Drillers would finally apply some offensive pressure in the top of the 8th inning when Casey Mulligan surrendered a double to Matt Repec and walks to both Charlie Blackmon and Bronson Sardinha. The Cardinals would then elect to relieve Casey Mulligan for Adam Reifer who would allow Daniel Mayora to cash in the Drillers' runners with a two-run single bringing the score to 5-3.
The Cardinals would immediately answer in the bottom of the 8th inning on a Steven Hill solo home run over the left center field fence increasing the Cardinals lead to 6-3.
Adam Reifer returned in the top of the 9th inning to maintain the Cardinals lead at 6-3. With five innings of work, 7 strikeouts and no walks, Chuckie Fick earned his 1st win of the season. The Cardinals offense got back on track today as Tyler Henley went 4-4 and took part in half of the six Cardinals runs.
Springfield will conclude their four game series with Tulsa Saturday night. In game four, Springfield will send right hander David Kopp (7-1) to the mound against left hander Christian Friedrich (0-3) for the Drillers.
