Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Corpus Christi rallied from a two-run deficit, scoring three in the eighth, to trim San Antonio 7-6 Wednesday night at Whataburger Field before 5,478.

Brett Phillips' single, his fourth hit of the night, scored Jack Mayfield from third for the game-winner.

Michael Feliz (5-2) was perfect in relief for the Hooks. Feliz retired all 13 of the men he faced after coming on for Chris Devenski. James Needy (4-1) lasted 7 1/3 innings for the Missions in a 102-pitch effort. It took him just 15 pitches to navigate the sixth and seventh innings before the fateful eighth.

Needy was responsible for five earned runs, 10 hits, and four strikeouts.

A.J. Reed's fifth Double-A home run, and third hit of the contest, was a towering 340-foot blast to left as the Hooks drew to within a run. Conrad Gregor's double into the right-field corner scored Jon Kemmer (infield single) from second base. Kemmer reached the keystone when Missions third baseman Duanel Jones mishandled a ball off Mayfield's bat.

Reed tops MiLB with 28 home runs and 99 runs batted in.

Corpus Christi (18-15; 66-37) got on the board first. Phillips laced a lead-off single to right, swiped second, and then changed places with Colin Moran when the Hooks' third baseman rapped a double just inside the first-base bag.

Hunter Renfroe drove the first pitch of the second inning out of the park to left, his 13th round-tripper of 2015 creating a deadlock. Two-out hits from Diego Goris (single) and Taylor Lindsey (ground-rule double) put two runners in scoring position, but Chris Devenski recovered to whiff Griff Erickson.

The Missions (12-21; 43-60) forged ahead with a four-run, six-hit third. Yeison Asencio's 10th homer - a two-run shot -reached the left-field berm sidewalk. Benji Gonzalez's double netted a run, as did a single by Goris.

Corpus Christi pulled to within three at 5-2 during the home half, Reed's opposite-field, two-out ground single plating Danry Vasquez. Vasquez reached on an error charged to second baseman Lindsey.

Asencio continued his assault with a fifth-inning RBI single, scoring Gonzalez from second with two out.

Devenski, who allowed 12 hits over 4 2/3 innings, fanned two in a 65-pitch, 54-strike outing.

Like Asencio, Reed was back at work in the fifth, his two-out bouncer into left sending Phillips (double) homeward. Jio Mier contributed a run-scoring ground out as the Hooks made it 6-4.

Moran has authored an 11-game hitting streak and Phillips a six-game run.

Corpus Christi is 29 games over .500 for the first time ever.

The Hooks travel to Midland and San Antonio over the next seven days, returning home August 6 for a four-game series against the RockHounds. Corpus Christi sends Joe Musgrove (2-0) to the mound Thursday in Midland vs. Dillon Overton (3-1). First pitch 7 p.m.; follow the Hooks home and away on NewsRadio 1360 KKTX with Michael Coffin.
