Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

(CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas) - The Hooks continued their winning ways against Midland on Wednesday beating the RockHounds 9-3 in front of 7,661 fans at Whataburger Field.

Third baseman Mark Saccomanno gave the Hooks the lead for good in the first when he hit a two-out grand slam off of Midland starter Ray Aguilar (4-4, 4.06) to give the Hooks a 5-0 lead. The home run was Saccomanno's first of the year. Center fielder Josh Anderson, who finished two-for-five, scored the game's first run when he was plated on a fielder's choice to second base off the bat of Hunter Pence.

The Hooks added two more in the second when first baseman John Fagan led off the inning with a bomb to left field. Anderson followed with a single, stole second base, and scored his second run of the game on a J.R. House single. House would go on to add an RBI in the fifth when he and shortstop Ben Zobrist hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning.

Hooks' starter Mitch Talbot (2-3, 4.31) had arguably his best start of the season, tossing six and two-thirds innings while allowing three runs. Talbot held the RockHounds scoreless for the first five innings but surrendered an unearned run in the sixth and two earned in the seventh.

Zobrist provided perhaps the biggest play of the game when- with runners on second and third and two-outs- he made a diving stop deep in the hole off the bat of Midland's Kurt Suzuki. Zobrist quickly rose to his feet and fired a strike to first to end the inning. The play saved two runs and quickly crushed Midland's hope of a rally.

Designated-hitter Josh Bonifay added some insurance when he hit a lead-off home run to give the Hooks their third blast of the game and a 9-3 lead.

With the win, the Hooks pulled out to a two-and-a-half game lead over Midland in the South. The series will continue tomorrow at Whataburger Field when Chance Douglass (4-1,3.99) will take the mound for the Hooks against Midland's Brad Ziegler (5-2, 3.53). Game time is 7:05 pm. Don't forget about "Thirsty Thursdays" at the park where drinks are half price.
