Hooks 2006 schedule out
November 2, 2005 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
HOOKS OPEN 2006 SEASON AT HOME - The Hooks last played a game on September 4th, a thrilling 3-0 extra innings win over San Antonio to conclude the inaugural 2005 season. Those same San Antonio Missions will provide the opposition when the Hooks open the 2006 Texas League campaign at Whataburger Field on Thursday, April 6th. The club plans to make Opening Day in 2006 a special event, with an afternoon start and a festive atmosphere throughout the day.
The Hooks will open the 2006 season with a nine-game home stand, and will play 70 home games through August 25th. Corpus Christi will conclude the season with a nine-game road trip, playing the final regular-season game on September 3rd in San Antonio. The complete schedule is now available on the club's website at www.cchooks.com.
SEASON TICKET HOLDER BONUS! - The season ticket renewal deadline has passed, and there are still some folks out there who have yet to make their intentions known. If you are considering your plans for 2006 and want your seats reserved, please call the Hooks' ticket office right away at 361-561-HOOK and let your voice be heard!
For those of you who have already renewed, you will be happy to know that the season ticket package will include more than the Hooks' 70 regular-season home games. It will also include an exhibition game with the Astros' Triple-A affiliate, the Round Rock Express, which will be played sometime between April 2nd and April 4th. Plus, the package will now contain the first Whataburger College Classic, a four-team collegiate baseball tournament that will take place at Whataburger Field March 10th through March 12th.
That weekend, the Islanders of Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will host TCU, Rice and Arizona State in a round-robin format. The Whataburger College Classic will be an annual event that features some of the top college baseball programs around the country. A similarly structured tournament has enjoyed a great deal of success in recent years at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock. Hooks' season ticket holders will be able to attend all six games of this inaugural event.
FALL BALL - Apparently, our update last week on the Astros' farmhands playing for the Surprise Scorpions caused a little confusion with some readers, so we want to clarify some details that perhaps were slightly misleading. The Astros, as do the other major league clubs, provide six players from their system to the Arizona Fall League. Houston's six players are assigned to the team in Surprise, and it just so happens that five of those six players were on the Hooks' roster at some point during the 2005 season.
One of those players, outfielder Josh Anderson, is having a great fall season, currently batting .357 for the Scorpions with one homer, eight RBI's and seven steals in 17 games played. Anderson, along with Charlton Jimerson, Wade Robinson, Philip Barzilla and Aaron Williams remain in the Astros' organization, and their inclusion in the AFL is usually a sign that these players are highly thought of by Houston. Williams, by the way, who appeared in just a few games for the Scorpions, was shelved by the Astros due to an injured elbow.
The Scorpions, one of six teams in the AFL, is comprised of prospects from the Astros, Angels, Cardinals, Phillies and the Royals.
SHOW US YOUR PICTURES! - In our continuing effort to update and refresh our website, we are inviting you, the fans, to send us your favorite photos taken at Whataburger Field during the 2005 baseball season. We would like to start a Hooks' Fan Photo Gallery, and you can send us pictures of friends, family, players - anything that you think would look good on the website.
Please e-mail your favorite pictures to us at photos@cchooks.com. Be sure to include a short caption for each photo and the date of the picture, if possible. We will review what comes in and post our favorites at www.cchooks.com.
If you are looking to add to your collection of memorabilia from the 2005 season, here's a reminder - the book "Hooks 2005 Season to Remember" will be available at Hook, Line & Sinker within the next couple of weeks. This coffee table picture book, done in conjunction with the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, captures the essence of the inaugural season of Hooks' baseball in a slick 120-page publication. It can be yours for just $24.95, and, for an additional $20, you can have it autographed by Hall of Fame pitcher and Hooks' owner Nolan Ryan.
KIESCHNICK TO BE HONORED - Hooks' investor and former player Brooks Kieschnick will be inducted into the Longhorn Hall of Honor at the University of Texas in ceremonies that will take place next weekend (Nov. 11) in Austin. Kieschnick was a three-time all-American at Texas and twice won the Dick Howser Award as the nation's top collegiate baseball player.
The former standout athlete at Carroll High School began the 2005 season as a reliever for the Hooks, then moved up to AAA Round Rock after five appearances for Corpus Christi. Kieschnick will be inducted along with three other former UT athletes, all football players (Tony Degrate, Diron Talbert and Eddie Phillips).
WEBSITE POLL - Most of you out there felt pretty strongly that the number one highlight for the Astros in the World Series was the performance of starting pitcher Brandon Backe in Game 4 at Houston, when he blanked the White Sox over seven innings of work. A full 58% of the 134 poll respondents said Backe's effort was the best among Astros' players. Jose Vizcaino's clutch pinch-hit, two-run single late in Game 2 tied with Lance Berkman's five total RBI's in the first two games in Chicago for the second best highlight, with each receiving 16% of the vote.
A hot topic out now...the list of available free agents on the market. Most of what is being written and said about the Astros is that the club needs to bolster its offense for 2006. Do you agree? This week's poll lists some of the available free agents, and asks which of these players would you most like to see in a Houston uniform next year. To log your entry, go to www.cchooks.com and scroll down the home page to find the poll on the right side.
