Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers picked up a third consecutive victory as they were able to outlast the Alexandria Blue Anchors in a 12-11 win on Sunday at Mayo Field.
Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) singled in the bottom of the first inning and advanced all the way to third base on a wild pickoff attempt. Tyler Baker (Wichita State) followed with a RBI single to score Burgess and give the Honkers an early 1-0 lead.
The Blue Anchors responded quickly as Tim Cusick belted his first of three two-run homeruns on the day to take a 2-1 lead. Cusick lined his second homerun over the right field fence in the top of the fourth inning and Alexandria led 5-1 after three and a half innings.
Jeff Campbell (North Dakota,) Reid Roper (Illinois,) and Kevin Barker (UC Davis) all singled with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning to set up a bases clearing double for Tucker Tharp (Kansas.) Burgess followed with a RBI double to score Tharp and tie the score at 5-5 after four innings of play.
The Blue Anchors regained the lead at 7-5 by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. All seven runs were charged to Honkers starting pitcher Jordan Milbrath (Augustana College.) Milbrath allowed five hits in his 4.2 innings of work. Alexandria's starting pitcher, Colin Wendinger allowed five runs on ten hits in his four innings.
The Honkers regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a pair of homeruns. Burgess launched a three-run homerun to take the lead at 8-7 and Alex Greer (Iowa Western) added a two-run blast to give Rochester a 10-7 lead after six innings. Burgess and Greer were two of the four Honkers with multiple RBI in the game. Greer had two, Burgess drove four in, and Baker and Tharp each collected three runs batted in.
Cusick brought the Blue Anchors to within one run as he drove his third homerun of the game over the right field fence in the top of the seventh inning. The Honkers were able to get the runs back in their half of the seventh inning. Barker singled with one out, Tharp walked, and both runners came around to score on one-out single by Baker. Barker added three hits in his second game with the Honkers.
Alexandria would not go down easy, as they scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning, but Stephen Paladino (Felician College) retired Cusick on a ground ball to end the inning and left the go-ahead runner on base. Paladino earned his first save of the season as he struck out three batters in 1.2 scoreless innings. Brandon Stennis (Doane College) picked up the win (1-1) as he allowed four runs on five hits in three innings in relief. Ty Walker took the loss (0-1) for the Blue Anchors. He allowed four runs on two hits in one inning out of the Alexandria bullpen.
Rochester (10-9) will look to complete a perfect four-game home stand as they finish up the series with Alexandrian (4-13) on Monday June, 17 at 1:05 p.m. Derrick Hadley (Sam Houston State) is slated to make his second start of the season for the Honkers. Cameron Mingo (Princeton) is scheduled to be on the mound for the Blue Anchors.
