Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers fell in a home run filled game by a score of 7-4 on Monday at Mayo Field. The game featured five home runs, including the seventh of the season by Honker home run leader Johnny Coy (RsJr, Wichita State) for the Honkers lone home run.
Honkers starting pitcher Jeff McKenzie (So, Delta College) would struggle with home runs in the game, allowing four in his six innings of work. He would pitch well otherwise, only allowing five runs on eight hits with all four home runs coming with nobody on. He would take the loss and fall to 1-2 on the season.
Elliott Engle (Fr, Doane College) would pitch three innings of relief, making his Honker debut and becoming the 40th player this season to play for the Honkers. Engle allowed two runs on two hits and struck out three in his debut.
The Honkers would continue to be tormented by Northwoods League home run leader, Shaun Cooper. Cooper went yard twice in the game, extending his lead in the league with 16 on the season and inching closer to the NWL All-Time home run record of 19 set by Jason Washam who was a Honker in 1994.
Devin Thaut (Jr, Southern Polytechnic State) would be the offensive leader for the Honkers, going 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted.
The Honkers and MoonDogs will travel to Mankato for a 1:05 pm game tomorrow, and then come back to Rochester for the final game of the series on Wednesday at 7:05 pm at Mayo Field.
